Located in majestic Praça do Comércio, the Rua Augusta Arch is the glorious gateway to downtown Lisbon, the Baixa Pombalina, one of the city's grandest historical quarters. The initial design, integrated into the plan for a new city, dates from the period following the earthquake of 1755, and was conceived by order of the Marquis of Pombal. Today, after its reconstruction in 1875, it is an important tribute to the giants of Portuguese history. Recently cleaned and restored, it has introduced a new attraction - the chance to climb up to the top of the arch, via a lift. And the view once you get there is one of a kind. Standing level with the sculptures by Calmels, you overlook one of the city's central areas and the river Tagus. In fact, and not without a certain sense of inner majesty, you share the same view as King José I, in the square.
